If I doze off for a nap in the evening, when I wake up I'm in a really yucky, thick lather of sweat. Yet when I am first laying there, I'm chilly, and wrapping up to get cosy. Why do we get so hot when we sleep?

PS. I was talking about a nap for just an hour or less. :)

Because your body heat accumlates inside the blanket, eventually you raise the temp. so hot you sweat and wake up "yucky." lol It's just the accumlation of your own body heat but trapped inside a blanket or whatnot.

Heat production in your body could be measured in Calories per hour. A Calorie (big C) is the energy to raise a liter on water one degree centigrade.
This production varies from more than 500 Calories per hour (heavy exercise) to (maybe) 25 or so (4 am).
Aside from muscular and digestive waste-heat, the amount of heat produced in mammals is regulated by epinephrine levels, which change very rapidly, like in minutes, and thyroid levels, which change and take effect very slowly.
They vary through the day, as part of your biological clock. Even if you choose to nap at an unusual time, your hormone levels will be close to what they when you're up and around. Thus, you're producing daytime heat energy, but you're covered up and snuggled in to reduce heat loss. Net gain in heat.

I notice this too. Its from all the moist air around your body from your skin and when your wrapped up inthe blanket the moist air does not dissipate so it just sits there and you can't cool down

Actually, I think your body temperature drops a bit during sleep. If you're hot, it's because you're too covered.
