Under some circumstances, the law requires an employer to allow time off for family situations. Check out the family and medical leave act of 1993 and see if you fall into that category. If you do, your boss can do nothing and is required by law to allow you time off without pay and without consequences. Check out the website below for the leave act information.

Good luck!

I agree, no boss should be able to treat you that way. However, most companies feel that working moms should be workers first and moms second. If you decide to stay at this job, or if you move to a job where they feel the same way, next time you have to take care of your daughter I would tell the boss that YOU are sick...legally they have to give you time off! Good luck in sorting all this out; I hope your daughter is okay!

If you have the personal time it can be used for your children also. Its spelled out clearly on the poster where the minimum wage and anti-discrimination stuff is. I'm sure you gave your workplace all the notice you could. This is a bigger problem than you think with people being browbeat into coming in when they are sick or kids are sick and then infect others at the workplace when will the workplaces learn that productivity is higher when we aren't harassed for calling in?

bosses have their own lives too, but still show up all the time and need their workers at work. i'm sure when you get back to work, they'll ask how everything is...don't let that worry you. i'm sure they were mad, but they'll get over it. you have enough to worry about right now, stay off the computer and spend some time with your daughter, that's great that you have the next 2 days together!

You are right. There is no excuse for your boss acting that way. You also shouldn't be miserable in a job. If I was you, I'd start looking for employment elsewhere.

When he says that, tell him firmly, "I will be back when I am sure that my daughter is okay."

I am sure that there are laws about family illness. He can't treat you that way.

Nor do you own your job. You're free to quit if you don't like the way you're treated.
