Aside from the obvious solution of being sure to get enough sleep, what strategies can you recommend to help me stay awake in class?

I've given all of the answers I thought were good a thumbs up and the one answer I didn't particularly like a thumbs down, but I can't decide on the best one! So, I'm putting it to a vote. Thank you all very much for answering my question, I really appreciate it.

Suck on a peppermint candy. Peppermint helps make you more alert. It is actually a good strategy for exams, too.

Of course, coffee or other drinks with caffeine may help if you can have those drinks in class.

Take notes, even if you already have a book or a whole lecture manual. Taking notes will focus your mind on what the teacher is talking about and the physical activity will aid in waking you up. As an added bonus, it helps you remember the subject matter as well as the other details added by the teacher during the lecture.

If you are really feeling sleepy there is a point just below the jaw that if you apply a bit of pressure would help a bit in waking you up. Look into an acupressure book so that you will know which specific part to press.

Caffine, redbull, before class. If there's a break, drink more caffine. I take night classes after 8 hours at work, so if I yawn in the middle of class then its not because I'm not interested. Also, when sitting tense your legs then release. That gives me a bit of a spur to wake up. Bite your lip, chew you pen cap, fidget. But don't bother the other people around you.

Oh my, I remember one day, I think it was three months into my freshman year. My math class was so warm, and I was so tired, I kept falling asleep. I had to pinch myself to stop from falling asleep, I'm not joking.

Peppermint was a good idea. You're less likely to fall asleep if you're involved in the class, so when you feel yourself getting drowsy, ask a question. Listen closely to the answer. Respond.

* Eat a substantial breakfast.
* Avoid eating candy and other high-sugar foods.
* Vary your activities.
* Stay physically and/or mentally active.

Take copious notes. I know that is intuitive, but if you pretend your interested then it's a lot easier to stay awake.

get un-addicted to sleeping pills. no, seriously, if you go to a cold university, then wear a t-shirt. you could get into major trouble with the teacher for sleeping, then you probably wouldnt do it again.

lay off of the pot and the booze, do the required readings BEFORE class so that the lectures make sense to you, pay attention to the professor and take notes... you slacker!
