I just got a new computer. It used to have the old stuff on there but my uncle updated it so i could have Windows XP instead of 98. We put in the keyboard and for some reason it did't work. So i'm wondering if you need to have the same model of them in order to work. The hard drive is a Gateway and the Keyboard is IBM.

not all all. keyboard has to be compatible with your motherboard, not hard drive.
The board simply has to have the right port hole in the back for your keyboard to be plugged into.
The motherboard has a built in program called the BIOS which determines whether the keyboard is compatible with your motherboard as soon as you turn on your computer.
If not compatible or if not connected tightly/correctly, then the computer usually stops/freezes with a message saying there is a keyboard error preventing you from going further.
Most common cause is the keyboard wire not connected tightly.
Also make sure keyboard not connected in the port intended for the mouse as the two ports often look similar if they are what's called PS/2.

I had something like this happen before - the computer gave a error that there was no keyboard, but it was plugged in. A reboot fixed the error, but it happened again. After a run through with anti-virus software and some sort of utilities / cleanup program (this was years ago), eventually the problem stopped happening for good.

It definately has nothing to do with the brand of keyboard.

Shouldn't be a problem, but make sure you power off the computer before you plug in the keyboard. Have you tried other keyboards with the computer (like using his or a friends) to test it? Of course, you can keyboards at wal-mart for 5-7 bucks..

Not at all. I have a General Electric Keyboard and a Wintergreen systems Hard drive and they work. Maybe the keyboard is broken, or perhaps the port it's connected to. try getting a USB Keyboard and see if it works
