About as much as it did when Pele played back in the 1970's.

I am not sure. The problem with soccer here (the United States) is that while we love playing it we don't watch it alot. Personally, I think it's because Soccer can go an entire game without a point or only about 3, we are used to high scoring games. Also, American Football is so big in the United States, followed by Basketball, and then Baseball that it is really hard for sports such as Hockey (except in some states) and Soccer to compete in ratings. Personally, I hope it does make Soccer big in the United States because it really is enjoyable to watch if people give it a chance. I hope that answers your question.

Beckham is probably the best-known footballer in America (slightly ahead of Ronahldino), so it certainly can't hurt things. However, one player does not a league make. Americans have shown time and time again that they will not pay to see a mediocre game.
If the rest of MLS doesn't follow suit and concentrate on not only bringing the best American players to the league, but also getting some quality players from the rest of the world, then this will be the biggest waste of money in American sports since Ryan Leaf.

Maybe for a little while. His popularity gets a boost on this side of the Atlantic because of his "Posh" wife Victoria. The hype wont last for long. I think he made a big mistake. Personally I don't think he's that great anymore. If Pele couldn't change the way soccer is viewed in North America, Beckham definately wont be able to.

" Will Beckham joining an American team have a positive influence on soccer in the USA? "
can anything do that? I don't think anything exists that can motivate Americans from liking soccer like the rest of the world...they're too busy sacrificing, I mean sending troops to...wherever

I'd doubt it. They tried it with Pele in the late 70s and it didn't start an American soccer craze. I think it'll have a positive influence and create some interest. But Football, Baseball and Basketball with still stay way more popular in the US.

Of course it will! He's gonna play for the L.A. Galaxy and that's really gonna make a hit! It'll definitely make "soccer" more popular in America! Beckham' really looking at the money huh?!!!

Yea I think it'll help with marketability. Bringing over someone like David Beckham will get people looking, hopefully buying tickets, and hopefully creating an interest in the game.

Yes it will be a good jolt for the MLS, however not to the effect of Pele joining the Cosmos in the late 70's.

I think it most definitly will because right now the mls is not doing so good so having some one like beckham come in is only gonna be a good thing....he is a great player and maybe he can do some good now that these are his last years!
