alright see im having a baby here in a couple weeks. and i have to fill out her birth certificit. & i think i am giving her both mine and her fathers last name, just not his or mine.. we arent married and no longer are dating and i thought that both of us should have our names with hers...fair enough.. but me and the father have talked about taking a break and seeing down the road if we want to be together, but if me & him end up getting married or i get married to someone else, how much would it cost to get my daughters last name changed perminetly at the court house.
i know it can be done, and i know there is a fee but im not sure what the fee is..

Well there are a lot of factors in all of this. If you give the baby yours and his last name and you end up marrying him and just want his last name instead of the hyphen of yours I think you can do that with just a Social Security change form. If you marry someone else and want your child to have the new fathers last name he will need to adopt the child and your ex will need to approve this happening. Is it possible to give the baby your last name as a middle name and have the real dads last name? If you are having a girl, does it really matter about changing her name later on anyway? She will eventually be getting married (hopefully later than sooner) and changing her name anyway.....

Actually if it's done in the first 12 months of life, there is no cost except the 7 dollars for a new copy of the birth certificate. A legal name change in Wisconsin costs $270 and then you pay different fees for new copies of items like social security card and birth certificate. As for marrying someone else, why would you change your child's name? It's still HIS child, not the new guy. Plus, you need BOTH legal parents to change a child's name...married or not. Good Luck!!

In latin america and many other countries the child always takes both the mother and the fathers name. I think you are being selfish wanting to change the childs name if you get married, I still have my mothers name even though she got remarried and I feel proud to carry the name of the family of both my mother and father, I would never dream of taking the name of my step father, even though I lvoe him as much as my paternal father, my real parents family is my heritage and their names are the names I should have.
With my child once it is born will always go by both mine and my partners (The fathers) surnames, after all he is her father I am her mother. I don't beleive it would be right for a child to take a surname off the step father. or wait till the child is 18 and let her/him choose whether they want to take your new husbands surname or not, that would be the mature way to do it I believe and meanwhile let it take your maiden name and the fathers surname

If you do give the baby both names and end up wanting it changed down the road you might want to just wait until the child is old enough to decide. You never know...the baby might end up loving her unique last name!
Good luck!

When my son was born my bf (husband now) and I werent married so the baby had my last name. When we got married we filled out some paper work and had it changed. It didn't cost us anything. I'm not sure if it's different state to state (we are in NY) but didn't cost us anything.

That depends entirely on where you live. You may be able to simply look up on your county courthouse's website the fee or if not give your probate judge's office a call and ask. The fee will vary from county to county!

Why would you change your daughters last name if you get married? The man who fathered her is whose last name she should have. If you get married to someone else your last name would change. Hers would only change if her biological father decided to give up his rights to her and the other man legally adopts her.
