Ive worked in the restaurant industry for over 5 years. Im tired of it and my dream has always been to be a Software Engineer or a Computer Repair Technician. How much schooling would I need? What classes would I take? How long will it take? How much does it cost? Ive searched online and have come up with nothing... Your help is very much appreciated! =o)

First you need to decide which of those career paths you want to take. Computer repair technicians have very different jobs than software engineers, and they will each require different training.

Computer repair techs should take classes that qualify them to take and pass the A+ certification exams. I believe this is two tests. The testing vendor is CompTIA and classes will cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to thousands. Tests run about $150 each, but if you fail you have to re-test and re-pay.

Software engineers, well, that is a huge feild. You might want to be a java programmer, or someone who works in C++ or .NET or one of dozens of other computer languages. Different softwares are written in different languages and generally, software engineers have two or three languages that they know well, and don't know much about the rest of them. Classes for software engineers can run as high as several thousand dollars.

Your best bet is to load up on some cheap computer books--- look online at halfpricecomputerbooks.com or ebay, or check your local bookstore and see what's in the sale bin. Don't worry if you are not getting the most recent version of the books--- you don't know enough about what you want to make it worth sinking a lot of money on the newest, latest and greatest. Get a PC repair book and a second-hand computer and all the programming books, and work through the exercises. See what you like to do--- you may go to school to be a java developer and be bored out of your skull with it. Try several different things till you find one you like. Then start researching schooling.

Check with ITT Technical Institute. Google it for the website.
I had a friend graduate from there and he has a very good job in the banking industry as a computer security specialist.
Good Luck!!
