I have never danced before, well ballet when I was 5, but nothing since then. I thought about salsa, but I think of that as a sexy dance, and I'm a very shy person. I'm not too unco-ordinated, but I'd like an easy type of dance to start out with. I'd like to also improve my fitness level through dancing, but I'm not very fit, so I'd like a dance style that will not be too strenuous, but also challenging. Does anyone have any ideas of what type of dancing I should do? I don't think ballroom is my style though, although I'm open-minded about it. The rumba looks like a fun dance, but would a Latin dance not be right for an introverted person? Thanks for any answers.

Modern ballet or classical ballet. Perfect for a shy person - - - it's controlled moves and very graceful. Not only does it tone up your body (also not strenuous), but it benefits your posture and you'll learn to carry yourself well when walking. My daughter took classical ballet from age 10 to almost age 15 1/2. Money well spent.

Why don't you try street dancing as it is a very fun but challenging style of dancing and you work up from being in the beginners class up to being able to compete in competitions or jsut being an expert! Or you could just try line dancing as it may seem to be just for older people but in fact many of my friends (under 24) go & it is challenging but a good laugh!
I personally started off doing Ballet at the age of 31/2 & have worked up to doing most styles of dancing & have taken over 20 exams and have passed all with distinction. You could try Ballet again, although it will take you time to get back into shape for it & getting back into dancing again. I hope you succeed in whichever you choose!

I would say that Salsa is a good choice, it can be very sexual but only if you choose to make it. Something else you might want to try is Argentine Tango, not Ballroom Tango mind you, there is a very big difference. It doesn't have to be flashy and showy to be fun and enjoyable which, I think, if you're an introverted person you would like. But if you want to get fit through dance ballet is great for that.

Rumba would not be the first for you to try. It's basically upright sex with your clothes on. But social level standard/smooth dances (foxtrot, waltz, tango) would really be right up your alley. Don't let the advanced ballroom you see on TV dissuade you. The social counterparts are not quite the same, and your introversion will melt away at the same rate as your dancing skills improve. That's the most beautiful thing about ballroom. You would probably enjoy cha cha from the beginning as well.

I'd recomemend 5 Rythms Wave dance. It is very a free expression type of dance that works on the principle that we move in 5 different rythms- flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. The teacher plays music that reflects each rythm and you move as you feel. It's great if you're shy as you don't have to dance with anyone else, but it also helps you work through your shyness. It's really easy- there's no rules apart from 'keep moving'. It is very good for increasing fittness, but as there's no rules you can take it easy when you need to.

Have fun.

what about ballet and salsa, ballet helps you for fitness and posture , if you walk with posture and confidence and with a smile on your face you won't feel that people think you are shy anymore and salsa will help you to overcome shyness, and you won't be sit down during a party and you'll have the chance to meet interesting people who also love to dance salsa, tango, cha cha.. I practice both , I am shy guy, and even in ballet I had the chance to make some friends

It sounds like you like the idea of latin dancing. why not give it a try? it is good to build confidence and dance can be used to express many feelings and charaters.

why not go along to the local centre and observe some of the classes. i have been to salsa and found it to be fun and a laugh. It was not in my opinion overtly sexy but was definatly a good work out!!.

Have fun whichever you decide upon!!

In my opinion I reccomend you picking up ballet again alot of people do it at all different ages 5, 10, 15, 25, 30, 40 ,55 and so on. You could join your local YMCA which offers good prices for all sorts of dancing. even rumba maybe..:)

breakdancing wins, hands down. If you can bust out a flare, no one can touch you! breakdancing looks much harder than it actually is, and with all dancing, you will start by learning the basics such as toprocking and the 6 step. these moves look impressive but they literally only take about half an hour to master. you should give it a try, classes are usually very open to beginners plus...what kind of dancing is cooler than breakdancing? NON!

Any type of dancing. I like to do salsa (and I am not good) I like to do some of the dances from the 70's and 80's. Look online and see what you like or sign upi for some at a rec center.
