Movies have become so expensive to produce these days that the theaters have a hard time making money with a double feature. The cost of the run, lack of snack sales because people are full from their first movies' snack (that is where they make their money), the shortened attention span of the average person, etc. all contribute to the death of the double feature.
Also, have you noticed that there are these buildings called "multiplex" theaters? THAT is the biggest reason for the end of the double feature. The D-F used to be a draw for people to come in and see something they may not have wanted to see, but they did want to see the other feature. The multi-screen theater did away with that need.

What happened to the double feature movie theaters is the same with the drive in theaters. No interest in seeing a movie that you don't want to see. The megaplex movie house has taken over and offers the viewers a lot of choices of movies to watch.

It's USUALLY only at drive-in theaters now. Sometimes you can get lucky at an indoor theater but it is always at a drive-in. But good luck finding one of those. They are going the way of the dodo bird.

I live in Phoenix and it still goes on from time to time, though usually in the more seedy of theaters (and just about every drive-in).
