I just started a belly dance class and LOVE it!!
Found that even tho i have much more to learn, seem to be pretty good at it from the start, even tho I'm a beginner.
It's been so much fun, but kind of a shy person socially. Was wondering if most dancers are fun to be around in general, used to being by myself/trying to break outta my shell!
There's other's who are beginners like me, but so many that are very experienced.
My goal is to be in a local performance just for fun, but hopefully look as good or almost as great as the other more experienced dancers w/out feeling intimidated. Any helpful hints how I can achieve this? KNow I need to practice a lot to get to where I want to be. :o)
Thanks

it depends on the person. Me personally, I'm an attention whore so I love to be in the spotlight all alone. There are some who feed off another person's vibe.

Do what you feel is most comfortable to you.

I love belly dance too. I have been taking classes for over six years now. Most of the dancers I have gotten to know are alot of fun.

I was so extremely shy and quiet in high school, and I'm sure nobody there would believe that I would ever get in front of an audience and perform belly dance. It does take time and practice to get comfortable with the nuances of various movements. I'm not sure what the rules are where you take classes but... you could arrive a few minutes early so you have time to ask questions of other dancers who may arrive early, or ask questions of your instructor. You could ask for advice about doing a move from a more experienced dancer, if possible. Or you could get advice about music and costuming. If you happen to live near others in the class perhaps you could find a time to practice together outside of class time. It's a good way to become acquainted outside of class and also learn more about the dance. I get together with another dancer who lives nearby and we rehearse class routines and anything else we want to work on. Most of our group has been dancing together for awhile now. We are also there to support one another when we are dealing with stress in our life outside of dance. We have become sisters-in-dance. We all try to make new dancers in the class feel welcome, and encourage them. Just try to relax and have fun when you perform. The audience will enjoy your performance if you're having fun yourself. :) Good luck.

I'd say, find a good friendly group. It all depends on the group - whether or not dancers are friendly to each other. Some groups have really supportive atmosphere, some are really competitive and jealous of each other.

Bellydance is relatively self-absorbed activity, meaning - you don't get to interact with other dancers most of the time when you dance. I think it works great for a shy person - you get to talk to people sometimes, but it's not overbearing.

Depends on the person themselves. I myself am a performer ((some people just do a 1 and-a 2, and-a 3 and 4 and 5 and 6...etc. Just do the steps. No true emotion. No true show. Performers take those moves and make it organic, make it pop, sizzle and just come alive!! They live the moves, not just do them!!)) And I am used to entertaining people and being "on" So yea I'm a little firecracker! But, in order to do so you must become comfortable with yourself and I know that when I am performing, I'm not myelf, I have an alterpersona that is a strict d-i-v-a and thrives off attention. But it really depends on the individual.

It all really just depends on the type of person. Some people are concentrating & don't do any tricks, some just like to have fun. But all around, they are fun to dance with in performances!

I find it wonderful to see the personality of different dancers. Evry dancer is very different!
