I have a theory that people can find fault in any political figure. But there had to be one who had the support of most, if not the whole counrty. Also, what about presidents that were revered during their office but have been vilified as more has come out about their dealings outside the public eye? Would you rather know your president was a scumbag while he was still in office, or find out 20 years later?

A lot of hard-liners thought JFK was too soft on Cuba, and disagreed about his plan to withdraw from Veitnam. That's the basis of a lot of the conspiracy theories that say that Johnson was involved in his death.

Lincoln may be one of the ones we admire most NOW, but he WAS assasinated for his political stance. He had half a country suceed from the union becasue they disagreed with him.

It's come out in later years that Eisenhower had a long standing affair with the woman that was his chauffer. I'm so glad someone brought him up! He was actually the first one that came to mind when I was forming the second part of this question. So, even though he was well loved in office, does his affair make him a scumbag in the eyes of history. Clinton's did.

Perhaps one of the earlier presidents were liked by both sides, but lately just about all presidents have been disliked. Lincoln was assassinated because someone didn't like him, as well as JFK, Regan almost got assassinated, Nixon got kicked out (but that was a whole other story).

Let's look at the other big name presidents:
Lincoln: Not liked by the South
WW2 Roosevelt: Not liked because he was in office too long
Nixon: Watergate
Ford: Too lazy
Clinton: His affair with what's her face and paid Al Quida to protect us from harm from them
Bush: In a war with no known cause.
No president has had a 100% approval rating, but to answer your question: I'd say Washington.

I think the U.S. started out as being almost perfectly unified in their beliefs, truly being "One nation under God", but that the U.S. citizenry and its representative political parties have become increasingly polarized, not only in their basic beliefs, but in their inability to agree to disagree to solve the nation's problems like they used to.
Having said this, I think that the earliest Presidents, like George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were the most popular among Americans, and the most recent Presidents, especially Bill Clinton and George W.Bush were the most unpopular, or at least in Clinton's case, the most polarizing.
As a proud U.S. citizen, I believe that every U.S. President in our history has done his best to ensure the happiness, freedom, safety, and unity of Americans.
At least Clinton and Bush (especially Bush of course) have suffered and payed enough for their mistakes while in office, and apologized several times for them.
I think as true American citizens, we should take the high road like Ford did and pardon our Presidents for their mistakes, so that we and our politicians can spend our time dealing with the really important issues of our times.

Eisenhower. He was the last president to serve more than 2 terms, being elected 4 times. I think by the end though even he was wearing out his welcome. Politics are by their mature polarizing. It should come as no surprise that hate of the other party plays a major role in how we see ourselves and each other.

ike got us into vietnam, that had to be unpopular.
edit. to be fair, let me reword that. truman started our involvement in vietnam, ike continued it and took it further. as a result the history books credit him as the president in office at the start of vietnam.
