Freedom is what the colonists wanted. Freedom from the oppressive rule and unfair taxes levied by England's King George III.
The founders of the US were actually opposed to democracy, which is the reason they wrote a Constitution and instituted a representative republic.

Actually, to the early American colonists, democracy was not important.
They just settled various areas for the 3 Gs... Gold, God and Glory. (They were either treasure seekers, Christian missionaries, or fame-hungry explorers.)
No one intended to seriously change the world's political stage.
