My friend has Xbox live for his regular Xbox, I have Live for my 360, I wanted to add him as a friend just to chat and do whatever but when I enter his Gamertag it says it doesn't exist on Xbox Live. So do we both need a 360 or what?

No, I have a Xbox 360 and get on Live all the time. I have plenty of friends that are on my friends list that have an old Xbox. You can add Gamertags to anyone who has Live on an old Xbox or a 360. My suggestion is make sure that you are entering it in right first and that your not mixing up things like O's with 0's and such. If that doesn't work than call the toll-free number 1-800-4-MY-XBOX. You don't Both need an XBOX 360. I only have a regular xbox and i play with several of my friends who have 360' and it works fine. I would reccomend that you double check the spelling capitalization and spacing and it should work.

No you dont have to have an xbox 360 to play on Live with other 360-ers. he may want to call in and check on his membership status to make sure everything is working properly because it sounds like he is getting the boot.

No, when I transferred my Xbox membership to my 360, my friends list transfered without a problem. Make sure you have the spelling exactly right or ask him to put your gamertag in.

no i play all the time with people who have a regular xbox (i have 360) maybe you spelled it wrong or mixed up the numbers. idk. have somebody else start a custom game and have them invite each of you and then send him a friend invite.
