would I be better off trading it in or taking it to a consignment shop?

Unfortunately, Ovations don't bring a whole lot of money whether you sell it yourself or trade it in.

If you want to wait for awhile a consignment might bring the best money, but if it were me I'd trade it in.

It's always better to sell it yourself. They'll rape you on a trade-in and a consignment shop gets a cut of the sale price (could be as high as 50%). If you want to sell it yourself, best place to look and see what they're going for right now is Ebay.

I'd trade it in to a good shop. Currently, the Ovation Applause AE28 is going for $249.99 in a "Buy It Now" auction on e-bay.

Often, a shop will give you a better deal if you trade it in toward another piece of gear; they want the sale, and they want to rotate their inventory.

However, as a musician who misses all the great instrument I've had to give up (foolishly or otherwise), I recommend keeping all your gear. You never know when it will come in handy, either for yourself, a bandmate, or in a serendipidous trade opportunity. Lots of folks on places like craigslist.org are constantly looking for acousti/electric guitars.

I would definitely NOT do consignment. Works great for small things (like your bands' newest cd) when you just want to get the word out, but for a large, one of item, you're basically paying someone to sell it for you - which you can do for yourself, free.

good luck-
c.
