Well you read all the answers but non of them is correct. I know, I did it. If you have no os there is no way your laptop will recognize the usb cd-rom. For this you need a windows 98 and xp cd. So take out your hard drive, Connect it to another laptop, if you have to connect it to a pc ide, you need an adopter. Start with win 98 cd, fdisk and delete all partitions because win98 wil not recognize ntfs drives. Create a new partition FAT32 and format it. but use "format/s c:" so after format, win98 loads system files in to the drive and makes it bootable. Create an i386 directory in the c drive "md i386". Then put in xp cd and copy the entire i386 directory to the drive "xcopy/s *.* d:\i386 c:\i386". You need to have some dos files like xcopy.exe, config.sys, smartdrv.exe on the c drive root. You can download them off the net. After copying put your harddrive bak to your laptop and boot.
You will get c:\> then type "smartdrv" press enter, type "cd i386" press enter, type "winnt" and that will kick off windows xp installation. then you are home free.

I don't have any easy way without the CD drive, although there might be a way using a USB drive if you have a USB port. Your computer must have a connection inside for a CD ROM drive, which you could get and install easily. You can buy a drive for less than $15, but you will also need a cable, which should be cheap if there isn't one already inside your computer. Go to a local computer store or do a Google search for CD ROM drives.

You cant download it, and you cant install via a network or memory stick. It has to boot into the OS.
You will need to use an external CD or floppy drive. Maybe someone somewhere (work, school, friend, PC shop) can let you borrow one for an hour or two.

The best way is using a Hard disk PC adaptor, proceeding same way as a Normal instalation, unplug your First Hard Disk, ensure that laptop drivers are copied.
That Hard disk adaptor is about $15.00.

I THINK there is like a 6 disk floppy solution.
I'd rather use the thing as a paper weight before trying it these days, though.
