Either cold hands or an inability to find anything else to do with them. Many people -- especially when they're nervous or young and not socially skilled yet -- find their hands a problem -- what to do with them. I think that's why some people smoke -- gives them something to do with their hands. Alternatively, some fold their arms across themselves (very forbidding), some keep their hands together (prayerful?), or resting on their thighs (not all that comfortable). And some put their hands between their legs, tucked out of sight.

I will if I'm cold. While we are on the subject, why do guys always have to touch themselves to make sure everything is still there? Its not like its going to magically disappear in the 20 seconds since you touched it last.

I'm a girl, and i never do that. I wear blue jeans and sit with my legs spread, because thats the most comfortable way to sit.

You got it wrong, it's the guys who like to put their hands into their pants, checking if its still there. Girls know its still there, they might be just warming their hands.

It's a girl thing.
It is often an expression of insecurity.
Or an expression that they are not comfortable with a situation.
Watch a girl setting waiting for an interview or a girl that thinks that she is in trouble for something and that is what they do.
It is mostly very young and adolescent girls that do that and not so much women.
