I know I'm a good writer. I'm planning on returning to school (college) this coming fall. My problem is I am seriously stuck between 3 career choices, all of which I am good at. (Near genius IQ, needed GIFTED classes throughout school because I have to be challenged) I know that I have always excelled with my essays, school paper articles, and so on. I used to write for a soap opera website, but it was volunteer because the whole site was run that way. It was created by someone who loved soap's and he got started out by having help from those of us who could write and watched tv as well. My real issue is, before I decide which classes I am returning to take, which career path I would like to follow, is I would like to see if there is an audience for my writing style, or if I'm just fooling myself. So that is my basis for the above question, kinda would like to test run some work to see if that's really what I want to do with my life.

One of the best avenues into the world of freelance writing is newspaper journalism.

Newspapers are deadline-oriented machines and editors should not have to take the time to forward your information to the right person. The last thing you want to do is have them remember you that way. To find out how to contact the proper person you can either contact the human resources department or send a brief e-mail requesting information from the appropriate section editor.

Obviously, don't start with the New York Times. There are lots of smaller newspapers which often run short on writers that produce strong work with short notice.

My local newspaper has a section called open mic. Basically, you tell them about an issue via email or letter on any topic. In my case my high school had mold on the celings and nobody was doing anything about it. some of us got sick missed school etc..... Anyway the news paper published my complaint. If you write to them and they like it they will publish your story. Keep doing it and soon people will want to hear your voice as a writer.
