You're right. Too often verbal abuse is substituted for verbal sparring. I haven't decided whether it is the average intelligence of the participants or just the political climate here in the States right now. I think one of the problems is schools don't teach people how to debate issues anymore. I used to have a teacher who would have us debate both sides of an issue. We would split the class and one week we would debate one side and then switch and debate for the other side. Good stuff. With our colleges and universities now indoctrinating instead of educating it should come as no big surprise that people are losing the ability to converse and debate at anything but a 3rd grade level. We as a country have reverted to a bunch a school children calling each other names. Peace.

Nothing on here seems really helpful. I've read some pretty good one's though that offer different views on the war in iraq and abortion and things like that. but most of the people on here are too right-sided or left-sided. I try to see both sides so that I don't have to stick with one side. I mean I agree with things that come from both sides, and I don't think people should have to back up everything their party stands for. Half the time people ask and say the rudest things possible that only make them sound ignorant, like they have no education at all. I mean who can assume that all Democrats support abortion and all Republicans are bible carriers. I thing everyone should look at both sides and make their arguments based on that, not just what their party says is right.

A few comments to answer your question. I have found the vast majority of partisans on both sides do not posess the skill of creating a logical arguement and thus cannot understand a logical arguement. They are so convinced that they are right and the other side is wrong, that logic is ignored. Essentially it comes down to arrogance, ignorance, and stupidity.

boy are you right.
"Or is it that your bored and getting people riled up is fun!?"
I think this is the main purpose. I too, like any smart @ss like to answer and ask smart @ss questions sometimes. but people are taking it a little too far. people are opening seperate yahoo answer accounts just so they can goof off. and no it is not productive.
I also think there should be an age requirement for those who open an account with yahoo answers.

My duty is to destroy my enemies, not to debate them. We are not little old ladies sitting around in a sewing circle. The future of civilization is at stake, which means we must be belligerents. Cliches about polite discussion are what people are told to cripple them from effectively standing up for anything. Believe me, the people in power want us to be cattle mooing politely in a herd.

Well many think calling someone stupid validates their argument and they win by default. Those are the people who are really stupid. I tend to tell people in that situation quote "there is no arguing with that type of logic".
Because of course they aren't using logic.

Most american's have no idea what truth is, seeing that thier media is pure propaganda and left/right spin. They'd rather have american's debating right vs left instead of right and WRONG!
