Why are coat pockets sewed closed. And what is the proper procedure to openning them. Why do they sew them close. It seems they are manufactured that way.

When a coat is on a hanger, if the pockets aren't sewn shut the weight of the pocket pulls down and they gape open a little. The coat doesn't look as nice, so people are less likely to buy them. If there is a pocket beneath you can easily remove the stitching with a seam ripper (less than $2 at any discount store) or with a small pair of scissors. While it is possible to just pull and rip out the stitches, you run the risk of distorting the fabric.

Coats with the pockets sewn shut weren't designed to have functional pockets - just to have the look of a pocket. Putting something in your pockets alters the look of the coat - which wasn't what the designer wanted.

That is so when people try the coat on they don't warp the pockets out of shape if they put their hands in them. Just clip the threads and you'll be all set.

they're sewn so they lay nice and if they are functional easily unthreaded by either a seam ripper - or using a scissor (carefully).. most suits with pockets are sewn as well and again it's for the drape. if you don't plan on ever using them - keep them sewn shut - if not just carefully remove the thread.

Because they're just for looks.
