I get a lot of my advice regarding my home PC setup from PC Magazine. You can check the archives at their web site. Periodically they have full articles on "how to" do something like set up a full home PC secure network, and you can probably find it there. Here's a good one to start - "7 Tips for Building a Secure Home Network":

go to pcworld.com and search on home networks, or just on networks. They have a great bunch of reviews. I favor Linksys, since I have found it works well.
pcworld is good with reviews, and they are clear and usually fair in their calls
