I actually heard that emeralds were more valuable since they are more rare.
Think of it... diamonds are everywhere- but an excellent quality, large emerald is truly special.

It completely depends on size and quality. I have seen representatives of each and prices range from a few hundred to several thousands per carat and more. To correct a few answers, a 1 carat diamond - round of H-I color and VS clarity is wholesaling for about 3500.00 per carat. A 1.00 carat diamond for 1500.00 is not much worth looking at. To the Tiffany lady, Sapphire and Ruby are the same mineral - corundum and the hardness is the same - 9 on the MOHS scale. Emerald is the name given to that special green color of the mineral Beryl and has a hardness of 7 1/2 to 8. Emeralds are typically thought of as being fragile because of their growth habits and the fact that they are usually highly included - this has an affect on the durability of the stone - not the hardness.
For the record, I am a graduate gemologist with over 25 years experience and have bought all over the world.

Hi! Diamond is the most valuable stone in your list and one of the most valuable in the world. In the USA today a normal 1ct diamond gold ring will run you around $1500. It is a tie between ruby and emerald for 2nd place and sapphire is 3rd place. However, it is funny to note that sapphire is only 2 steps down to the hardness of diamond. While ruby and emerald are very easy to chip and are fairly soft. Good luck with your project!

The size obviously matters! If you had a hundred tonnes of something it would be worth mroe than a single grain. However.. the real answer is that it depends on how rare the material is. Diamond is the rarest and hardest to obtain as it is extremely hard structurally and chemically so more expensive equipment is needed to obtain it from the ground.

depends almost completely on size. a smal diamond is worth less than a slightly larger ruby. tit for tat, same size, diamond mostly, but this is a huge generalization. value depends on size, clarity, color, quality of faceting, and lastly composition. if all the stones were the exact same in all aspects (excluding color, of course), then it would go diamond, emerald, ruby/sapphire. rubys and sapphires are interchangeable, as they are both the same gem, just different colors. emeralds are second because of their relative softness, they are harder to facet well. diamond is first, of course, because of its rarity.

The myth is that the most expensive one is diamond, but it is not the white ones we know of. The cost of gemstones are based on the rarity rather than the name. Most expensive stone known is Ruby that can cost up to $30000 per carat. However, red diamond even beats that price... so if you tell your teacher that it is ruby she might give you full marks but tell her that Red Diamond are rarest of rare stone in the world and are very very expensive. In 1987, for example, a red diamond sold at auction for almost a million dollars per carat, and recently a 13.44-carat deep blue sold for $550000 per carat so diamond is the most expensive.
Would suggest telling her ruby first and then tell her about red and blue diamond.....!!!!!

A diamond is typically the most expensive, but really it depends on the size of each of them.

Diamond.
The others can be made cheaply and easily artificially. Artificial diamonds are still very expensive (give it another 17 years or so).
