First up: Rain Listener is right, Poetry.com is a scam don't touch them with a barge pole.

Any organisation that promises to publish your poem is just a scam, because they will demand you buy anything between 2 and 100 copies of the anthology. Which is how they make their money.

Second, Artley B is also right: Publishers do not want e-mail -- unless they specifically say it's okay. Otherwise they will ignore you completely.

Getting ripped off is unlikely, however publishers do get concerned about amateur authors claiming that the publisher has ripped them off. Which is why they will ignore you.

Third, Hotclaws is wrong, you don't need an agent -- not if you're submitting a single poem.

Which brings us to the next question: Why are you submitting a single poem? What use do you think a publisher has for one poem (unless it's an epic)?

The only time you'd submit a single poem is if it's for an anthology. Forward Press is a good one for anthologies (or it was) I even got paid!

You need to find the right markets for your work, you have to be a professional. Get the important books (as Rain Listener said). Get on to online poetry critiquing groups -- check out http://www.writelink.co.uk/ -- and get your poetry up to a good standard.

Write lots of poems!

This you will have to be very careful with. If you find a fake, they may steal your work and take credit for it, especially if you have no drafts and notes to prove it is your in court.
Try checking book stores and seeing if visiting authors are there to see how they found their publisher. Also you could find a big publishing agentcy and send your work there, after you make sure they are certified.

Publishers don't like email from wannabe authors. Send it, properly set out, by snail-mail to several publishers whose details you'll find on the net.

Check out the book, Poet's Market 2007.

This is your best bet. Avoid websites such as poetry.com. It's a scam.

Look in the Artist's and writer's yearbook, although there are some on-line poetry publishers..try putting it in your search engine.
