The Orkenys chain:
28 inhabited islands, 39 smaller islands used for grazing purposes, locally known as holms, and a large number of waste rocky islets or skerries.

The Shetland Islands,

Then if you include the dependencies:
Anguilla, Bermuda, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena and Ascension, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands

It adds up to be approx. 1,000 islands in the UK (mainland & surrounds) alone, perhaps as high as 1,200. Very difficult to find any exact figures sorry- maybe you can be the first to count them!

According to Wikipedia, the UK has around 1,000 islands, 700 of which are in Scotland alone. These islands give a land area of 242,514 sq km (93,638 sq miles).

The British Isles is said to have over 6,000 islands, again, according to Wikipedia, but I failed to find any exact figures. If I do, I'll be sure to edit them into this.

If you mean islands that are apart of the UK there is about 6 or more. Islands that are not apart of the UK, there is 3 or more.
