I noticed that the stores are selling formula for 12-24 month olds. I didn't think babies needed the formula past 12 months. Shouldn't they just have regular milk and dairy products after they turn a year old?

At our daughter's one year check-up, her pediatrician told us that she can have cow's milk now if we choose to give it to her. He said that some parent's ease their children into cow's milk, mixing the formula with the cow's milk. Starting with very little cow's milk, and increasing the amounts until the child is drinking just cow's milk and no formula. He said that other parents quit using the formula all at once. He said how we do it is up to us.

Whether we give it to her warm or cold we give it to her, he said, is also up to us.

Our daughter is healthy, has only had one real episode of sickness and that was when she was six weeks old. What is best for our daughter, may not be best for your child. I would suggest you ask your pediatrician concerning what's best for your child.

Good luck.

Many people switch to milk after 12 months, mostly because of the cost of formula. Formula has many extras in it that mik does not have, and milk can be difficult to digest.
If your child has a well balanced diet, and doesn't seem to have a problem with milk, then 12 months should be fine. If he is a picky eater, with a poor diet... I would continue with the formula so that he gets the extra nutrients.

Some babies cannot digest whole milk even at 12 months so some companies make a formula to fill in until they can handle whole milk.
12 months is usually the ideal time to start giving whole milk...remember to give it grandually and mix it with formula over a few days!

You are right. Babies can switch to whole milk at 12 months unless there are health or allergy issues.

In fact, there is a test your pediatrician can give that will allow you to start whole milk a little earlier. We started a little younger than 12 months. We mixed it with formula at first and then converted to just whole milk.

You should talk to your baby's doctor first, but in general 12 months is fine for switching to milk, as long as your baby can tolerate the proteins. By 12 months, your baby should be getting all or most of his nutrients from regular foods, so as long as he is eating a variety of healthy foods, formula is not necessary. Don't believe what companies are trying to sell you - their job is to make money, not take care of your baby.

But talk to your doctor, because every baby is different!

They just want your money. After both my boys turned one they quit drinking formula and drank whole milk. By that time they are eating more solids and are getting enough nutrients between that and the whole milk. Just make sure that you use whole milk because they need the fat for brain growth. I tried to give mine 2% but our family doc said they needed the fat.

You're right - unless they've got some sort of allergy or medical condition requiring them to have a different kind of milk, after 1 year they should get all their dietary requirements from normal milk and a proper diet. It's just a way for the companies to get more money out of you!

when my gal was about 11 months the ped had us start giving her half formula/half milk combo to see how she tolerated that and if she did then each week cut the amount of formula and increase the milk and by her first birthday she was on whole milk completely

Well, my mother breast fed me up until I was one, so I am sure it is similar for formula, though, it is mainly the mother's choice. I know one baby who was breast fed until he was 2, and he's 5 now and just fine, so I'm sure it would be ok to stop now, but as I said before it's up to you.

Perhaps something in-between would work well? 15 or 16 months? Just a suggestion.
