With maddening difficulty and frustration. A bad snow blizzard hit Chicago in 1979. A man who had a job driving the snow plough went bonkers and deliberately drove the snow plough into cars smashing them up. He admitted he just snapped.

LOL! that's an old question, but a good one
The road clearance teams, are alerted of severe weather conditions. By regional weather forecasts to head office
so crews will be asked to , either stay overnight at the depot, or come in earlier than usual .,
They are on hand, to man the snow ploughs and put salt and grit on the icy roads
They do a wonderful job , and usually get "on top "of the nasty conditions. ( on pretty low wages )
They keep the roads relatively clear, so that emergency services
can do their work effectively
THEIRS IS is a VITAL service ..

They take the snowploughs home with them. That way they can plough out of the village/town in the morning and everyone who needs to get out can follow them.
At night they plough back home so everyone who lives in their village/town can follow them back.
