The studies done by the original owners of Mother Earth News for the use of such things as methane gas for fuel and to heat with. They also had a series on the use of wood gas production to make a use able fuel. This consisted of a tank that was kept air tight, except where air was allowed in to burn wood on a cast iron hearth. The smoke is pulled down through the fire to produce usable fuel gasses. This is sometimes referred to as "producer gas'. This fuel source was used in Europe during the second world war to offset the lack of gasoline for the civilian population. In general, check out Mother Earth News, I think you will find some interesting articles that deal with the use of technology, and science that while not "high tech" would definitely help reduce poverty.

Pick a problem that stems from poverty - hunger, homelessness, lack of opportunity. Look how you could address one of those issues through the means of technology. Hunger: how to preserve and transport food to areas of the world where food is scarce (dry freezing food, portable refridgeration). Homelessness: there is a company that is designs small, efficient low cost homes...expand that idea to housing complexes for low/no income people. Lack of opportunity: find an area in the field of technology that will has a promise of job growth and address how to train unskilled people to fulfill those jobs.

There are many excellent tools for poverty reduction- one of them is bio-gas.
I'll put a link below, but bio-gas is essentially putting your food & toilet waste in a big plastic bag and allowing it to rot. It produces methane gas, which is allowed to exit, leaving behind highly nutritious compost the poor may use to grow food, thus helping to gradually eliminate food dependency and wastign money on expensive or damaging heating fuels such as coal, wood or kerosene.
