I found my large plecostomus on my floor, he was there up to 8 hours. I threw him back in the tank because he was still alive. He now has scales missing and his fins are deteriorating. My tank water is red which makes me think he's bleeding. Should i seperate him from the other fish or should i find a humaine way of putting him down? He is eating and swimming around so I have no idea if he's going to rehabilitate...What should I do?

I would seperate him definately. Make a salt dip for him. This can help if he is injured. You may also want to add something that will help him with his slime coat. Then put an adequate hood on your aquarium so that no more of your fish are suffering.

Poor fishy!!! ..we had a fish for a few years my daughter brought home from school and he grew and grew and then the oldest got a guinea pig and needed something to put it in so she put the fish in a big bowl and well he jumped and by the time we found him it was too late. We did have one fish that the other picked on and his fins/scales were pretty bad but he did survive and they did grow back. If he is eating and swimming around (hopefully not doing a backstroke or "stand" swimming), I would think he should survive as long as the other fish aren't bothering him. I would call a pet shop that specializes in fish and ask them. Oh and check on the stuff that you put in the tank after you change the water or take them out, it protects the fish themselves.

You are almost certainly over feeding your tank. I'd do a partial (about 30%) water change AND siphon the gravel IMMEDIATELY! The red water is probably some bacteria bloom or something else not wanted in the aquarium. ANYTHING YOU PUT IN THE AQUARIUM STAYS THERE UNTIL YOU TAKE IT OUT. Is your gravel red? If so, it MIGHT be paint leaching off the rocks but the other symptoms point to to much food or something else rotting in the tank. I wouldn't worry about the pleco. If he is eating etc, let him go his way. I think you are probably over feeding your tank, which would raise the nitrate/nitrite/ammonia levels and lead to an acidic tank. That would also explain the deteriorating fins. Again, a partial water change is needed. I'd do another in about a week and then a third in about a month. Make sure your filter is working also.

I have had fish jump out of the tank and be just fine but not to this extent there is no way it could have been out of the tank for 8 hours. it would have died but I would assume it is in terrible condition from your desciption. you should seperate it because it might be sick and it could get the other fish sick, The way it sounds you should put it in another tank if you have one and just let it be in there for a while maybe a day or two and if it lives put it back in the other tank but if not atleast the other fish didn't make it suffer by eating it alive.

hi,
leave the fish in. This is a sign he is rehabilitating. This will happen for a while. Most fish make it! Bleeding is just expelling from being out of the tank. If you need more info post another question.

You should seperate him from the others but give him some of the water he is in now. All you can do is wait. If it gets really bad a humane way of euthanizing a fish is to put them in a bowl of water and put it in the freezer.
