If neither you nor anyone else changed your power-off settings, more than likely you have a faulty keyboard, especially if you have a fancy $50 ergonomic wireless job with hotkeys and programmable buttons. Try plugging in a standard keyboard and seeing what happens when you press SHIFT. If everything's good with the other keyboard, your old one was definitely faulty.

Go to Control panel, and check under Accessibility mode ( There may be some other places); there are ways to activate "sticky Keys", and also to activate short cuts. You may have accidentally activated a shortcut to Sleep mode using shift...Just unclick or uncheck the option

Did you have a software for your keyboard?? Your shift key may have been one of the HotKeys that send your PC into sleep mode. Microsoft and Logitech keyboard all have keyboard software installed. You need to find the keyboard software on your PC and change it.
