I think most Japanese DO like anime to an extent. Anime can be cute children's shows or really vulgar adult programs, as well, so there are a wide range of genres. There are a lot of anime, particularly romance-focused, that Japanese women/females really like, so it's not just a male thing. Just like in America, a lot of people like cartoons, including boys, girls, adults, children.

However, in Japan, just like in America, people who are obsessive about anime are looked down upon by most other people. These people tend to be viewed as "strange" or "losers". The "otaku" (as Americans call them) tend not to fit in with many people.

In general, people in Japan like anime (or at least some anime), but the typical Japanese person just likes it for entertainment value and doesn't take it too seriously.

It is the same as Cartoons like Justice League, and X-men cartoons in the US. Anime has a very specific audience depending on the storyline. But there are people who always cross those lines with no problem.

With Japanese Anime becoming more and more popular in the USA, Japanese are gaining a deeper sense of pride in their Anime. And in some cases, the older shows are being revived. Japanese are very proud to have part of their media exported to the West, to sort of off set the importing of US/Hollywood media.

It's pretty much the same in America. Although I think most people in Japan consider anime to be for kids. The people that are obsessed with it are called "otaku" and there are conventions for anime in Japan just like in America.
