Marriages and divorces are matters in public record. If you know the area a person is from, you can go to the county seat. There are also on-line services that (for a fee) will look these things up for you. You would need to know some basic personal information about the person (the more the better), like full name, birthday, social security number, current and possibly prior addresses. But it is findable.

If you know the county that they lived in WHEN THEY GOT MARRIED, you can find out from them.

If you don't and can't ask, it's probably worth the $29 or so that you can spend for an online background check. That's if you're thinking of a relationship and don't want to ask, yet.

I think the best bet is to ask. If you don't trust the answer, then they're probably not the person you want to have a relationship with anyway.

In most states you can get on line and find out (public records) your need one of the full name and a birthday, most are free if not a small fee.

At first glance, I think you're trying to snoop on a past flame. Ok, I've had some luck with that endeavor. Use the internet to check up on em. Think about some of the groups/clubs/jobs they've held and google them. They may have posted a congratulatory notice to their teammate. A warning though: this could be bad for you, you don't want an ex floating around in your head. Just forget about em.

It can be quite difficult, you might try calling that person and asking, Hey are you married.
