increase your flexibility...you may think it strange but every fast guy I knew was also one of the most flexible people I knew. Also, I'd suggest working on your abdominals..lots of crunches. Core strength is important for the kind of shifty moves you'd make on the football field.

Plyometrics!!!! Plyometrics are any exercise where the muscle is contracted eccentricly then immediately, concentricly. In plain English, the muscle is stretched (i.e. loaded) before it is contracted. A good example is push-ups with a clap in-between each push-up.

Plyometrics exercises will also increase your speed (leg speed), these are many others that just focus more on movement. Here are some examples
Zig Zags ( medium intensity)
run an elastic cord about a foot off the ground. While on one foot hop back and forth over the rope. Repeat with other foot.
Side to side ankle hops
Same as regular ankle hops (see above) but instead of remaining in place you jump 2 to 3 feet side to side.
Sprints
Yes sprints are plyometrics since the force of your body coming down loads the hamstring.

Straight line speed (like 40 yd dash) or quickness, do you mean?

Straight line speed is all about fast-twitch muscles in your legs. Sprints and bicycles can help you with your leg speed, resistance running (parachutes or pool training) can help with your leg strength.

Quickness is more about leg and core strength, so you can work on abdominal and leg exercises in the gym to build muscle mass, and drills like cone drills, tire drills, wind sprints, or anything like those that has you changing direction rapidly to build muscle memory and improve your cutting.

This is what my football coach made me do.
1. Tie raw meat around your waist.
2. Get a pack of starving dogs to chase you.
3. Run for your life.

If that doesn't make you faster than shave all the hair off your body and you will be lighter.

speed is genetic you are born with it. you can work on it by running hills and squatting to streghten your legs but in the end the fastest people were born with it.
