Do I talk to her about being home and what she misses or should I talk about different topics to get her mind off of it. She started crying in front of me today and it really got me upset because I hate to see her like that. Any help you all could provide would be greatly appreciated. Ideas of things we could do or talk about would be huge. Thanks.

We're both in college and we just got back from Christmas break.

I was walking back to my apartment and she has one right next door. As I was coming in I saw her leaving so I walked up and started talking to her. I walked with her towards her class and as we are walking she kind of breaks down a little bit. I told her that it was going to be ok. I told her to call me after she got out of class and we could go out and do something. I also talked about a few inside jokes with her and she was laughing pretty good when she went into class.

Homesickness is about being lonely. Maybe get your friend to do something fun with you, and talk to her about the nice things back home and nice things to do in your town. Plan something fun for the weekend so that she can look forward to it.

Homesickness is about missing the familiar, and being lonely.

Your conversation, was it in person, or over the phone? Are you in the same area as here, or back"home"?

A care package would be a good start, have a few of her other friends get in touch.

Is she just hanging out at the house? if so, try and get her out and about, experience what the new town has to offer.

This is a difficult question to answer, as there is no right answer, and the answer would vary by person.....trust your gut instinct.

I had this same problem. I'm from Canada and I married an American so now I live in the States and I was so homesick.

My husband took me out and took me to see some beautiful places and showed me fun things to do in Utah where we used to live.

Make a ritual for her. Like going out for lunch at a restaurant she likes. Friday nights, you guys can go out for ice cream and movies. Something that she can associate as having fun, being with you in a new place.

Make her feel welcome where she is so she doesn't feel like a stranger to her new place.

Find things she can do where she is and then email or call back home and tell them. Don't completely ignore talking about her home .
