Robert L. May (grandfather).
Mr. May was the author of the original story which was written for Montgomery Ward. According to his story, Rudolph grew up in a reindeer village that was not associated with Santa. Santa discovered him while delivering presents on a foggy Christmas eve and recruited him, and his shiny red nose, to help lead his team so that they could complete their deliveries successfully.
Unrelated note: since male reindeer lose their antlers long before Christmas arrives, all Santa's reindeer must have been female. Therefore NONE of them could be Rudolph's FATHER.

Well, no one really knows for sure,or a least I do not, but my bet is on Santa himself because his nose is always glowing red too. ;-)
