I have no idea, but "this friend" should have asked her doctor.

Yes, that's why. Every time I had a pap test as a virgin, it hurt incredibly and made me bleed.

The doctor should use the smallest speculum on her (but it will still hurt). Really, virgins don't need pap smears unless they're having some kind of gynecological trouble--that's what my doctor said. Maybe she should ask her doctor why she needs one.

The pain that she was having might be attributed to her being a virgin, but if she was nervous or scared that can certainly make it harder to insert and make it more painful. And first time paps can be scary.

If your friend is have vaginal problems it's important for her to be seen and so she shouldn't wait. If she was going just to go, then it may be OK to wait until (if she's not already) 21 or sexually active. (Some people recommend 18, but the new age is 21).

So, if she is 21, have her go again, but if not, and there's no medical problems, she could probably wait.

No she should not wait until after sex. A pap is for situations like this. There may be something wrong that she know nothing about. She should tell the doctor about the pain she is experiencing. They could probably find a way to may her comfortable. Every young lady should start paps at age 12 or 13. A pap is good before sex ,also. You can find out if you're clean. If you have intercourse and somehow you catch something, you will have proof that you did not have it before intercourse. Tell your friend to talk to her doctor. It is very important for every young lady to have a pap.

that might have something to do with it but the OBGYN should use another method to do the procedure. the doc doesn't really need the speculum to do the exam. i know this migh be gross but he can use his fingers to keep the "lips" of her vagina open so that he can scrap the vaginal walls. he/she just needs to be cooperative and read up of alternative methods. the doctor can also in cases very gently cut the hymen(skin blocking the vagina) with a scapel. this procedure doesn't hurt, just nerve racking. this way there is no pain when he inserts the instruments.will also prevent pain during intercourse in the future. which is always a good thing ;)

No, the doctor should have used a smaller speculum or not used one at all. I would suggest that she find a new doc.

Well, what did the doctor say at the time? Did he tell her to come back after she has sex or come back next week and try to do it again?
