How would I write Richard III?

I am trying to write an essay on King Richard III. I am trying to figure out how to write his name out. I have found both Richard III and Richard the third.
Please help me figure out the proper way to write this.

King Richard the Third or Richard III is fine. King Richard the third gets your word count up.

Save your fingers- Richard III is perfectly acceptable.
