Long burning woods are hardwoods, such as oak. But they don't have as much aromatic oils.

Aromatic woods include cedar, pines, as well as wood from most fruit or nut trees (apple, cherry, almond, walnut, etc.) Evergreens, such as cedar and pines, are softwoods, burn hot and fast and send out showers of sparks as the pockets of oils ignite.

So choose a hardwood from the trunk of a large fruit tree.

And be extremely careful to not use eucalyptus - that burns extremely hot and fast, like a Roman candle.

Apple wood. When apple trees are cut down due to age, the wood is sold for firewood, it is very aromatic.
