Being shy is not a bad thing at all. I'd rather be around a quiet person then someone with a foghorn for a voice that never stops talking!

It's not a bad thing but people tend to judge the shy person. I was one for years and years but once I had kids and got into my 30's I got an incredibly big mouth.
If you are concerned about being shy maybe you could try with close friends to be more aggressive (for lack of a better word) and work your way up to it while in public. Remember that often people think shy people are stuck up and you don't want that. Because you don't want to speak up or have a hard time doing so doesn't mean you have an opinion different than what is being said. I am getting way off course, though.
Good luck on over coming shyness. It takes time and trying a bit harder. I am really sympathetic to you cuz, like I said-been there!
See? I can't SHUT up now! :o)

Being shy is not a bad thing, BUT, it can be detrimental to your well-being.
There are evil predators out there waiting for a little innocent like you and, you need to know that they are not going to be nice to you.
Be assertive - practice! Speak up! Raise your voice and ensure you are not taken for anyone's prey. Look people straight in the eye and don't flinch. They will understand you are no fool and will rethink any insane plans to harm you.
Practice being bold. Taking a karate class or some other martial arts training will do you wonders.

My daughters like that, granted she is ONLY 6 , but sometimes I encourage her to speak up. Mainly becasue I'm worried about that fact that something coulld pass her for the sake of the fact that shes so timid. I honestly dont believe that being shy is such a burden. However its a really loud world we live in. Its pron NOT in your best interest to be AS quiet when soemthing presents itself to you. Good Luck! Encourage YOURSELF!

I'm not shy but people still tell me that I have a really soft voice and they have trouble hearing me.
It feels to me like I am speaking plenty loudly but I guess not.

Yes.
It decreases the likelihood that you will marry and have children.
It reduces your ability to find and hold a job.
It makes it unlikely that you will advance in your career.
To quote The Smiths,
Shyness is nice, and shyness can stop you, from doing all the things in life that you'd like to.
