Fractions are made up of 2 parts the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number). in order to add fractions you muxt have a common denominator (that means it must be the same) when they are the same then you add the numerators and leave the denominator the same and that is how you add fractions. for example
1/8 +5/8 = 6/8 (or we can simplify that to 3/4)
now if we have different denominators then we have to make them the same
1/8 + 7/16 for the next step (1/8=2/16)
= 2/16 +7/16
= 9/16
and here is a tougher one
1/8 + 4/9 in this case we have to find a denominator that is a common multiple to both 8 and 9
= 9/72 +32/72 (1/8=9/72 and 4/9=32/72)
= 41/72
I hope this helps

Adding Fractions
There are 3 Simple Steps to add fractions:
Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same
Step 2: Add the top numbers (the numerators). Put the answer over the the same denominator as in step 1
Step 3: Simplify the fraction.
Example 1:
1/4 + 1/4
Step 1. The bottom numbers are already the same. Go straight to step 2.
Step 2. Add the top numbers and put the answer over the same denominator:
1/4 + 1/4 = 1 + 1 = 2/4
4
Step 3. Simplify the fraction: 2/4 = 1/2
(If you are unsure of the last step see the equivalent fractions page)
Example 2:
1/3 + 1/6
Step 1. The bottom numbers are now different. We need to make them the same:
1/3 = 2/6
Step 2. Add the top numbers and put them over the same denominator:
2/6 + 1/6 = 2 + 1 = 3/6
6
Step 3. Simplify the fraction:
3/6 = 1/2

You have to make the fractions have the same denominator (number on the bottom) by multiplying them. So, for example:
1/3 + 1/2
You have to use 6 as the bottom number because it is a number 3 and 2 both divide into. To see what to put on top, check how much you have had to multiply the bottom number by and times it by that (e.g. you multiplied 2 by 3 to get to six (check this by 6 divided by 2) so you times the 1 on top by 3 also).
Then you end up with:
2/6 + 3/6
and you can just add the top numbers together. This leaves you with 5/6.

the easiest way is to get the denominator (bottom number) the same for each fraction. Multiply both the numerator (top #) and denominator by the same number in order to get the denominator to be the same as the other denominators. For example, to add 1/4, 1/2, and 1/8...mutiply 1/4 by 2/2..you get 2/8. Then multiply 1/2 by 4/4, you get 4/8. then add..2/8 plus 4/8 plus 1/8. answer is 7/8. Get it?

if they have a common denominator then ur good to go. just add the numerator and keep the denomintor the same. for example.
1/8 + 5/8 = 6/8 which reduces to 3/4 (divide top and bottom by 2)
if they dont have a common denomitor then find one. for example.
1/2 + 3/5
find a common denomitor by multiplying 1/2 by 5 on top and bottom to give u 10 on the bottom, so 5/10, then get 10 on the bottom for the other one, so 6/10. then add them together
5/10 + 6/10 = 11/10
hope this helped
