You can buy just an individual string at any good music store. However, I have learned from practical experience that's it's ALWAYS good to have more than one complete set of strings with my guitars at all times. I have literally replaced a particular string only to have it break on me right as I was putting it on the guitar!!!

Music stores should be able to sell you individual strings.

I'm not sure about electric guitars, but acoustic guitars have different gauged sets you'll want to consider; you may not want to put a light gauged string with a set that is heavier, or vice versa.
