Let them both experience the world as much as possible. Tell them of the places they can go, tell them of your life. No matter how bad somebody has it, you've had it worse at one point. The child may be dying, but he/she will never know the pain of the adult world. The mother must learn that this is life and these things are bound to happen. She must not lose her faith in humanity or God or whatever she believes in. Console her; tell her that it is not her fault, nor is it God's will, nor is it bad luck. Make it into a good thing. Allow her to realize that this is the most golden opportunity to spend quality time with her child, to let her child know how much she truly loves him/her. She must keep on living. There is no way around the death of a child, and there is no pain greater than this. It will not make her stronger, it will not make her weaker; it can only change her life. What she does with her experience is what will effect the outcome of the rest of her life. It is a wake-up call. It is a sign from God or from Destiny/Fate or from whatever she wants to believe. Observing someone you love dying makes you realize that it is time to start living.
