You do need a firewall and you do need an anti-virus program. Norton Internet Security provides both of these.
However, Norton is by no means the only pacakge that provides that, and while not bad, it certainly isn't the best one. Several other packages provide the same facilities, many of them are free. However, you need to know how to safely download and install a package if you want to move away from Norton. Obviously I do not know how computer savy you are.

If you are for the most part a computing novice and scared of things like downloading, installing, etc., I recommend to renew your Norton license. You get reliable protection at a reasonable price.

If downloading and installing does not scare you, then I invite you to have a look at Zonelabs for a free (and excellent) firewall, and at AVG for a free (and excellent) anti-virus package. Once you have these two installed, you can safely uninstall the Norton package.

No. You simply have to open the main window of NIS; from there click on subscription status>renew. This will take you to the Symantec website and you just pay online for a new subscription. Although, I don't know how much a renewal costs, but if its around the same as the new version, I'd rather upgrade; but the decisions yours.
