Society is always changing, if it wasn't same sex marriage it would be something else. Social Change is a positive otherwise we would still think that the earth was flat, that the sun revolved around the earth and that the earth was the center of the universe. Social Change means that humans are continuing to evolve and shed those things that hinder them. Remember that Galilleo was persecuted for things that we now know is a fact

Just like when interracial marriage was legalized, it set the stage for people becoming more tolerant. Nowadays, it's totally improper to frown on it. It will become the same way with same-sex marriage when it's legalized. At first people will say "Well, it's a done deal so I guess I can't do anything about it." to total acceptance.

Great question!!!

There's a wonderful book about just this topic, "The Case for Same-Sex Marriage" by William N. Eskridge, Jr. (ISBN:0684824043)
http://www.amazon.com/CASE-SAME-SEX-MARRIAGE-Commitment/dp/0684824043

There are also quite a few wonderfully written internet posts on this as well:

i suppose just like racial equality changed society: it seperated them at first, but united them later and at the end, brought more oppurtunity to them.

same-sex marriages would change many many things. first, the things parents teach their children. there'd have to be more acceptance of those things. policies on discrimination against sexual prefrence would tighten. health care would now extend to both partners. maybe pictures of same-sex couples would be seen in magazines and i guess more people would find it easier to come out
