When i asked my grandmother about that she said it was the spirits looking to steal my clothes. Then my grandfather would say to both of us ,"
that's nonsense, it only means you'll have to sew them buttons on better and maybe use stronger thread."

My mom always said it means you're going to lose money.

It does seem thats when you're most likely to be broke. When you need a new button.
