There are other alternatives that can be used instead of or alongside tests like continuous assessment. Teachers give grades for a number of assignments over a period of time and a final grade is decided on a combination of these assignments.
Imagine these assignments are short worksheets/tests. The subject is ESL. What would you call these assignments? Progress Test to all of them or would you be more specific and use terms like Grammar Test, Vocabulary Test, etc?

proficiency in a language is how you would gauge or test a person. as well is this for both written and spoken, there are a lot of variables, and perhaps numbering them might help.

It sounds like you want to do curriculum-based assessment, or CBA. In this, you make your assessment based on what you actually taught. What to call them depends upon how your students feel about testing. If the word "test" makes them skittish, you can try "probe"--that is, Grammar Probe, etc. "Progress Monitoring" also has a nice friendly sound to it, and really reflects what you're trying to do. Frequent checks of student understanding give a teacher a much better picture of progress over time than one big test.
