That's actually a damn good question. Some people on here throw in their two cents on scientific questions when its obvious they don't know what the hell they're talking about.
I guess that want to feel smart or gain attention. Who really knows? Ask someone you catch doing it.

I'll agree with that but also if the person believes what you are saying, just the idea that you know something someone else doesn't is implanted in your head even if you're making it up! Also it may just be the fact that you blagged your way through something and succeeded in fooling someone into thinking you knew what you were talking about.

It doesn't make *me* feel smarter.
If a person *does* feel smarter while talking about something they don't understand, then that "feeling" is very likely an illusion.
Having illusions about oneself also quite often leads to suffering at a later time.
Maybe "feeling smarter" should serve as a "red flag" to do a reality-check on onesself to see where 'real learning' needs to take place.
it will probably lead to a happier life.
dunno ...

If we are talking about it with someone who does understand then we are learning from that person and are actually becoming smarter. I think.

It doesn't it perplexes one and causes even more questions to arise.
It is the questing to understand which is more important than attaining an answer.

I never talk about something I don't understand, but I do listen and ask questions.

it just lets you figure out a bunch of different possibilities. knowing that you figured them out makes you feel smart. then you usually decide in your own mind which is right and when you decide you've chosen ther right answer, which you thought of yourself.... you think you're pretty smart.
