Hi,

I'm having a difficult time with my XP. Everytime i click on a folder, a desktop shortcut or not, the desktop reloads with all the icons dissapering and appearing after a few seconds. Another problem, programs no longer work, with an error report needing to be sent on every program, such as w.movie maker and w.media player. Why is this happening??

Tom.

This actually occuring because it is redrawing the screen. Windows XP might be using up enough memory on your computer, that it is not giving the icons the allocation of memory that might be needed in order for them to be sitting there. It happens on all windows versions. It is something that tends to happen with all computers, but you may be noticing it more here because of the time it is taking.

Actually, it sounds to me as if your computer needs to be cleaned up. There are a couple of easy-to-use tools which can help you with this. Click on Start, then go to Accessories, then to System Tools, and select Disk Cleanup. It will probably take some time, but it will detect all of the temporary files on your computer, which you don't need, and give you the option of removing them. I suggest you do this. It also allows you to compress old data. Do this as well. You will free up a lot of space on your hard drive. Next, go back to the System Tools folder and select Defragment Hard Drive. This will definitely take time. Select Defrag, and let it do its thing. Files get spread out and stored all over your hard drive, and this will help bring them back together again, making accessing them much easier. This should hopefully resolve your problem for you, without having to wipe your hard drive and reload your operating system.

After you've done this, it wouldn't hurt to do a Virus Scan on your computer. I'm assuming you have an AntiVirus software and that you keep it updated. I doubt that a Virus is causing this, but it is a good idea to do a Virus Scan periodically, especially if you do a lot of Internet stuff.

One more suggestion. Back up all of your important files and folders, especially photos, videos, music, etc, and any important data you have. Back it up onto some sort of external media, such as CDs or DVDs, or even onto an external hard drive if you have one. This way, your data is safe if you ever do have to reload your system, or if the system totally crashes on you. And periodically back up your system again so that you have all of the newer stuff you've saved since your last backup.

Best of luck.

About 99 people out of 100, will tell ya it a virus...lol, I ain't that ignorant.
First post in your add details to this question any errors that come up. I am sure I know what it is. may need to format. But please do not restore or use some cheep AVG. Unless you want crap until you eventually take it to a PC tach, and they will just format and reinstall. So do as i ask, you'll respect me in the morning :)

you should try some resources to review if you have anti-virus, you can visit www.pandasoftware.com and go to free scan, then you will be able to see if you have virus or not.
if you have anti-virus, maybe is not update, or didn't make a scan in your computer.
try any of above and hope works for you
