they have consciousness in that they know what they are doing, but they don't have the cognitive capacity to think about why and what they are doing. they don't worry about feelings or emotions like we do. so yes, they think about stuff, but no, not in the same way humans do.

I LOVE dogs way too much!! I'm speaking about pets. They're animals too, even if some of us forget that!! Have had 20 over the years, 2 or 4 at a time. A "stream" no, except on the floor. But their little minds are always on the basics for a pet. Food=Love=Sleep=Good Tummy Rub=Sleep=Goodies?=Kisses=Love and so on.
Takes a simple mind to love openly, huh? That's why we have a responsibility to take good care of the pets. They are innocent.
All dogs go to heaven, remember? Good question!! @8=)

I have rabbits and I don't think they are that clever. They seem to be conscious and have thoughts, but they easily get distracted, so can't have a long stream of thought, which allows humans to have an idea and put it into action. They tend to react to things rather than have a purpose.

I have always imagined my cat has a dial tone as an internal monologue that is only interrupted by the sound of the can opener or a laser pointer.

My mother has the pom that is more clever than some people i know! She will come up to you if she feels you are down and will lick ure face and fool around you to cheer you up. Usually she is quiet!. Dogs are indeed very clever and are totally aware of the situation around them and what we are saying. They just cant answer back. Some even TRY to speak!

YES! I can just look at my cats and see what they are thinking like "What can I destroy next?", "If I jump in that bathtub with the kid, will I like it?" and "I will make her fall down the stairs by running in front of her feet, just watch me!".
