Production house, not producing house.

Actually Jeff is wrong - it is a producing house.

Theatres are either producing houses or receiving houses. When they are a producing house it means that they produce the productions which are performed there - it is their money which goes into it, their workshops build it, their wardrobe dept makes the costumes, they cast it, they hire the creative team etc. It basically means that the show is a financial risk for the theatre. Examples of producing houses are Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Watermill Theatre in Newbury and Nottingham Playhouse.

A receiving house on the other hand is one which takes in a production from a production company. It is not their money which has gone into the show and therefore isn't generally a finacial risk for the venue. The production company will either pay the theatre a set fee for using the theatre for a week or will pay the theatre a percentage of what is taken for the production in box office receipts. Examples of receiving houses are Richmond Theatre, Birmingham Hippodrome and Southampton Mayflower.

The receiving house that is being described here is also called a rental house, as they essentially exist to be rented by outside companies. There is also a third type of venue, called a presenting house. These venues do not produce the work they present. Instead, they book in touring shows, or road shows. These venues do take a financial risk, as the touring production is paid a fee by the venues. The venue hopes to make the fee back and more through ticket sales. If they do, the make a profit and everyone is happy. If they don't, they are often out a great deal of money. If you live in, say, Davenport Iowa and see a production of Mama Mia at a performing arts center there, this is almost certainly the way the production came to the city. Mama Mia's production company didn't rent the space, the space "rented" the production.

A "producing house" is a theater which produces its own shows, either with a resident theater troupe or with producers employed by the theater.

Most Broadway theaters are "receiving houses", which host plays but don't have a resident group which puts them on.

NOT TRUE. There are different types of tears and homo sapiens are the only ones who cry tears as an emotional response. ALL mammals shed basal tears - tears used for lubrication and to wash foreign objects from the eye, but emotional tears - which contain hormones unique to emotion-based tears - are shed only by humans. This is a lovely story, but so is Cinderalla, and there's no such a thing as fairy godmothers.
