Yes - tail lights 5 watts, brake lights 21 watts, appox 4 times brighter, otherwise how would people behind know when you are braking?

Hi there,
Bulbs that are fitted to the rear of a car are as follows, sidelights and tail lights are normally 12v 5w and stop/brake and fog lights are normally 12v 21w, so with this when the brake pedal is pressed the brake lights will be brigter than the side and tail lights. Indicators are also 12v 21w.

Yes they do. Side lights are normally 5W and are there to show what way the vehicle is facing and give an indication of what size it is. The brake lights are 21W so they take precedence over all the other rear lights, apart from the fog light, which is also 21W.

The back lights & the brake lights share the same casing, so when you apply the brakes, the back lights become noticeably redder.

of course they do,if the back lights were brighter than the brake lights then people wouldnt know you were braking therfore your brake lights need to be brighter so people know when you are braking,
