I've been waiting several weeks for a check, but I recently started a job this past Monday, and the first check was received today. Does it have to be returned or is it mine to use, as the weeks are for all the weeks I've been unemployed.

It's yours. You needed to wait 2 weeks to start filing so once you filed it was for the previous 2 weeks of unemployment. In fact, because you probably filed every week thereafter more might come and they would be yours too. What you have to do is tell the unemployment office that you have a job now and stop filing for more checks.

Congrats on the new job!

That check is for the previous week so you do not have to return it, as you can probably recall you called in on Sunday for the previous week not the coming week (the machine asks "did you work from 12/31/06-01/06/07?").....you have to call in on this Sunday to let them know that you started working and they will stop sending you checks......

That first one is yours, if you declare for the next two weeks, that is considered fraud, and they will make you pay it back. Contact them and let them know, if you lose the job it will be easier to reapply.
